Evaluation Deadline of April 15
Kansas law requires a written evaluation for teachers by
April 15. Kansas law also allows teachers the right to
respond to their evaluations in writing. In writing a
rebuttal or an addition to your evaluation, you may wish
to consider some of these points.
- Identify when the conference took place and
who was in attendance.
- Brevity is a virtue. Keep it short and to
the point.
- Respond only to issues discussed in the evaluation.
- Make note of, and express appreciation for, any
positive comments.
- Control your emotions as you state your side
of the story.
- Request specific and measurable suggestions
for improvement.
- Ask that a copy of your rebuttal or additions
be attached to ALL copies of the evaluation.
- Ask that the rebuttal or addition, as well as
the evaluation, be signed by the evaluator.
- You may obtain copies of your record file to
ensure your response is included.
- Respond within two weeks of the date you received
the evaluation.
One of the values of KNEA membership is assistance in
the case of a poor evaluation. If you have any
questions contact your building representatives
or your SHEA president, Georann Whitman.
Notice of Non-renewal
May 1st according to Kansas law is the deadline for
administrators to notify certified staff of non-renewal
of contracts for next year. This notice must be in writing.
Many teachers are offered the opportunity to resign, rather
than be terminated before this date.
If an administrator comes to you and asks you to consider
resigning before the BOE takes action to RIF
(Reduction in Force) or terminate your contract what
should you do?
- First, ask the person why they are giving you
this advice?
- Second, listen carefully to the answer.
- Third, take notes.
- Fourth, do not respond.
- Fifth, do not sign anything.
- Sixth, contact your SHEA president or Crossroads
UniServ Director.
There are many reasons to consider not resigning. Many times situations can be resolved without termination or resignation of the teacher.
